Shillelagh

Fruit tree wood, Ireland, undated.

This is a polished and varnished wooden cane based on a branch terminating in a large knot. Far from only being useful for walking, it turns out to be a duelling weapon whose interior could be filled with shot. A symbol of Ireland, today it used as a ceremonial weapon, among others by the officers of the Irish Guards of the British army.
